The Inn Design hotel in Amiens is within easy reach of the city centre which is just 10 minutes away by car… Not to be missed: the Somme Bay is a UNESCO world heritage site!
The Hortillonnages is a marshland area close to the city centre which covers an area of 750 acres and is criss-crossed by canals which divide it up into small gardens. You can explore it on a "barque à cornet", a flat-bottomed boat which lets you get close to the fragile banks of the cultivated plots of land. This boat trip is a great way to explore the "floating market"! It leaves from just by the cathedral and runs throughout the year.
Amiens cathedral is twice as big as Notre-Dame in Paris, measuring 145 metres long by 112 metres high (to the top of the spire), and the vaults of the nave reach a height of 42.30 metres. Dating from the 13th century, its construction was due to the wealth of the city in the Middle Ages and the fire which destroyed the previous Norman cathedral on this site. Since 1981 the cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. Twice a year, during the Christmas holidays and in summer, Amiens cathedral is lit up in a superb "son et lumière" show. Colour slides are displayed on the walls showing them in their original range of colours which were discovered after they were cleaned by laser. This is a show which will delight people of all ages! Another must-visit attraction is the Tour Perret! It's situated opposite the Gare du Nord and is named after its architect, Auguste Perret. It's over a hundred metres high and was one of the first skyscrapers to be built in Europe, and for a long time it was the highest.
During your stay in Amiens be sure to visit the old town and the Somme Bay area where you can explore the Parc Marquenterre wildlife park right in the heart of the bay as well as the Maison des Oiseaux ornithological centre. Discover the Parc du Marquenterre on the coast in the heart of the Somme Bay! This is an unspoilt area covering over 500 acres where dunes, marshes and woodland make up an attractive mixture of unique landscapes which abound in wildlife. A major stopover for migrating birds, the Parc de Marquenterre offers guided tours which allow you to discover the fantastic range of plants and animals in the Somme Bay.
